The challenge
Glenkens Community & Arts Trust (GCAT) purchased and transformed a former Primary School in Dumfries & Galloway and in 2007 launched it as a multi-purpose venue. “Catstrand” is a hub for the surrounding area, providing arts, community and training activities for residents and visitors. A second venue, The Smiddy at Balmaclellan was opened in 2020 offering meeting and event room space.
GCAT needed support exploring how to increase income through the development and promotion of its trading and enterprise activities. They also needed advice on any possible implications on their legal structure as a result of any increases in trading income.
How we helped
Accelerate ran idea generation sessions with staff followed by market research, initially focusing on options for expanding their current trading activities before considering additional possibilities.
GCAT was also furnished with the key parameters to be considered by any charity as it increases its trading percentages.

Recommendations prepared to increase income and sustainability ensured for a valued local organisation
Advice offered on the legal structure of the charity
The main outcome of the work was an extension of GCAT’s “anchor services”, the bar, cafe and venue hire. In particular, extending opening hours and targeting the visitor market were seen as the most immediate and effective way of increasing income without disproportionately impacting existing resources and capacity.
GCAT are now aware of the impact an increase in trading activity will have on the legal structure of their charity.
Accelerate are continuing to work with GCAT on the development of a digital marketing campaign and production of an e-brochure.
