Developing a feasibility study and business plan to support the purchase of a community shop

"Working with Community Enterprise was so easy.
We felt supported all the way through the process.
Our Development Officer was always available on the end of the phone
to go through anything we were struggling with.
We would definitely recommend Community Enterprise to anyone going on the same journey as us."

The challenge

The village of Dornie's only shop had closed and the Community Council was coordinating efforts to reopen it under community ownership.

The Dornie Stores building had been generously donated to the community by the late owner's family but required substantial upgrades to comply with building standards and meet the community's needs, which they needed funding for.

How we helped

To support the group's application to the Scottish Land Fund, we were commissioned with Stage 1 funding from the Scottish Land Fund to carry out a feasibility study for them.

This was followed by the development of a business plan for the community group, now incorporated as Dornie & District Community Trust, a not-for profit company limited by guarantee.

The result

Scottish Land Fund application successful

Asset brought into community ownership

Regeneration of local economy

Increased social benefits and opportunity for the local community

With some help from us, Dornie and District Community Trust were successful in securing funding via the Scottish Land Fund, and the Dornie Shop is now in community ownership.
