The challenge

Afristyle Dance Club (ADC) promote African culture, inclusion and diversity in Aberdeen, working with young adults from differing backgrounds and ethnicity. They offer a variety of dance programmes including performances to care homes and schools. They also organise monthly health walks which aim to promote an active lifestyle, reduce loneliness and encourage social inclusion.

As an unincorporated group, they wanted to map out a development plan which would allow them to meet their organisational ambitions as well as demand for their services.

How we helped

Through Accelerate, we helped map out a development plan by reviewing existing governance. In doing so, we helped the club meet both its organisational ambitions as well as demand for its services.

The plan strengthened ADC’s understanding of good governance and identified an appropriate legal structure. We also provided support with the revision of their constitution, the application of an appropriate financial management system and the adoption of relevant policies such as Health & Safety.  Lastly, we assessed current and future activities in terms of meeting ADC’s values, securing future funding and eventually generating income streams.

The result

Development plan completed

Promotion of inclusion and diversity across Aberdeenshire

Increased social benefits for the local community

Afristyle Dance Club is now in a stronger position to achieve its ambitions and further promote African culture.

The club has continued to build connections across Aberdeenshire, working with the council and other local partners, and is now ready to expand its services, for example establishing a support service for African children in the area and producing and selling merchandise.
